Post 15. Reflecting on Theory

Our short film and...

Genre Theory:

Genre identifies what category your film belongs to and creates a target audience based on this. Its helps to organise the best angle for your film and keep to certain conventions that allow a clear production and marketing campaign that people can relate that genre too. This is why we planned an idea genre before production to develop lighting and sound techniques that link with the psychological thriller theme.

Having this genre in mind however lead us to a problematic issue also shown in the Genre Theory. Genre Theory basically shows that certain conventions need to be fallowed and understood in the audiences mind to create a particular genre, for example cowboys, dust and deserts in a Western. Every genre has different elements to build itself up. However in modern times this idea is very hard to manipulate into contemporary films, as now a days people prefer a mixture of genres within one movie. With this in mind we saw that after writing the script, this applied to our short film as it also builds up romance, as well as the psychological thriller theme. This makes our film harder to identify what specific genre we are portraying and could compromise our audience. Yet at the same time may work to our advantage, as combining elements of two genres could encourage a larger target audience. Plus because our main genre isn't as popular, it could promote 'Closer' as it is unusual and something different for people to see, therefore is affective as it seems more interesting and mysterious.

Audience Theory:

Audience Theory reflects on the notion that texts have many different meanings which audiences have to interpret themselves. Theorist Andrew Hart states that "audience's are vital in communication, and if it wasn't for them media wouldn't exist". So in our pre-production it is very important to encourage strong links between possible audiences, distributors and producers so that a relationship can be built to ensure the popularity of our short film, so is essential to keep this connection.

Luckily as producers we are partial to a variety of views among different audiences and can use this within our film to build a certain genre as it has been said that; 'Audiences are the ones who define the genre of a film'. This being said makes it clear that feedback is necessary from potential viewers throughout our production process as they will be the ones to determine the fate of our short film. This could be done for example with the postcard design that has to draw you into seeing the film. As it is very important they recognise the conventions within our genre so they can understand and relate. You can also see from feedback the opinion they have of your film before viewing the final film and take any ideas they have to make the genre clearer. It also works in reverse as we can project the message of the director to make sure it is understood. Therefore this creates a bond between the communicator and receiver.
